 Meeting the Kids

{{dating}}Meeting someone for the first time can be a scary, exciting adventure especially for your kids and even more nerve racking when your kids are meeting your date's kids. To help ease the tension plan a simple 'meet-and-greet' date instead of the traditional 'I'll pick you up at eight' date.

Keep It Simple
Kids need your time and your patience to become comfortable with the new person or people you are bringing into their lives. For your first introduction plan to drive separately to meet in a public setting to give your kids time to talk both on the way to the event and again as you head home. Never put your kids in the awkward position of being in the cramped confines of a stranger's car when you are first introducing them to the idea of an extended family.

Take a Walk in the Park
As lame as it may sound, this is one of the safest ways for kids to meet and greet. It's a great place to break the ice. If you anticipate emotional distance between the kids and your date, the open space of a park offers distractions that keep it fun. Another bonus is that the time you spend can be as little as an hour or as long the day stays light depending on how well you hit it off.

Meet for Pizza Lunch
Pizza is a universally loved food by adults and kids. So it's the perfect meal to share for when meeting the kids. Let them choose their own pizza toppings for a welcome icebreaker. If the interaction is going well, extend the time together by visiting a nearby park or ice cream parlor.

Play for Fun
Meeting to ice skate, roller skate or to bowl can generally be a fun outing for adults and kids. Perhaps an even better idea is to cheer a minor or major league team leaving the competition and performance anxiety to the pros. Spend time rooting for the team, stuffing your faces and enjoy the time.

If both people are sensitive to the feelings of the kids, 'meet-and-greet' outings can be a great way to begin the process of bonding and an opportunity to see if there is any chemistry and to decide whether to continue in the relationship. {{/dating}}
